![]() When I was a younger and more inexperienced listener, they used to sound ominous and heavy, but they don't do the same thing for me anymore and just seem out of place given the general atmosphere of the music around them. I wish I could get into those harsh vocals more, though. In addition to those shriller vocals, there's a small helping of harsher vocals which work themselves into a sort of call and response to the cleans for a cool effect. ![]() However, she has a weird tone sometimes, and her high notes just seem a bit off at times, especially on the end of "To the Master of Darkness." In fact, going back to the praise, she brings some serious support and staying power to the choruses here, and in a way her voice is incredibly suited to cutting through and soaring above the background of the mix. The singer has quite a range and masters the delivery of the melodies and hammers home some good choruses. Taken on their own though, the orchestral background instruments are damn majestic and do sound quite cool (super Pirates of the Caribbean-esque at times). Personally, I love some crushing rhythm work paired with the double bass, so this album was a bit of a letdown in that regard for me. The rhythm guitars are drowned in keyboards and strings to the point that you only really hear the double bass pitter pattering behind them it's only on the solos that they move to the front and demand your attention. Unfortunately, I found that this album strayed way too close to the muddy side. powerful that melding it with bombastic string and choir sections can lead to a tug of war between the two musical sides, and a general muddiness of an overburdened mix. The sound this music brings to the table is already so. It's a delicate balancing act, incorporating orchestral backdrops into a metal album is. I'm a fan of all of these elements so long as they're implemented well, and on this album, for the most part, they are. They even throw in some "extreme" vocals too. This is an album that harbors almost all the tenants of traditional sword wielding power metal: choruses for days, double bass for months and no shortage of keyboards. Souless Child is the second instalment in what appears to be a conceptual string of albums, but I'm going to be focusing on the music and leave the lore for another time.
